View case here

This case is about slaves or slavery.

Year: 1871
Citation: 33 Md. 442
Jurisdiction: Maryland
People: Thomas Conner
Short Summary: Recovery of leashold property in Baltimore for property in which the owner named a slave for life as the last named legatee. Ruling that a decise of residuary interest to a slave (Thomas Conner) cannot operate as freedom but instead is absolutely void, distributing the estate to Thomas Conner's next of kin. " And as there has been no person in being capable of suing since the termination of the last life estate under H. Conner's will, until the grant of letters to the lessor of the plaintiff, the Statute of Limitations does not bar, although the holding of the defendant, and those under whom she claims, has been exclusive, and by claim of right and title in themselves, for more than twenty years since the termination of such life estate, and before the bringing of this action."
