Short Summary: Owner of petitioner delivered the peitioner a deed of manumisssion upon which the petitioner acknowledged but the owner did not record. The owner then, without possession of the petitioner, sold her at auction to a purchaser with knowledge of the deed of manumission. The court concluding that the petitioner is not entitled to freedom and that the act of 1834, making it possible to enforce petitions for freedom not recorded by law, is void. Holding that a slave owner's property right is equal in an improperly recorded sale deed the same as if the deed was never recorded.
